In this section, information is intended for all parents and guardians, but particularly those who have children with special needs or who believe their child may have learning or developmental challenges. In the message from the Assistant Superintendent, reference is made to student diversity, District-developed "Principles of Inclusion", and the belief that, whenever possible, students are supported so they can attend their neighbourhood schools. In Saanich, we are committed to supporting all students in the development of their individual capabilities. We recognize that children come to school with different backgrounds and experiences, capabilities, and diverse learning styles and needs. We also recognize that attention must be given to creating learning environments and providing learning opportunities that enable all learners to develop their individual potential. While all students are entitled to equitable access to learning, different degrees of intervention may be necessary to facilitate their access to an educational program and to support their opportunities for growth, development, and achievement. The necessity for support fluctuates in frequency, intensity, and duration. Some students may require intensive or additional support that is ongoing throughout their time in school; others may require intensive support for a short duration or limited amount of additional help to support their development and learning. What is important to remember is this: The need for support—for an individual and for students across the District—does not remain static. Requirements and priorities shift as circumstances change. At any given time, however, varying levels of support (depending on students' needs) may be needed as illustrated in the diagram:
Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
An IEP is a written plan developed for a student with a learning disability or special needs. It summarizes and records the individualization of a student's education program. For more information, please see the guide attached below.
