May 24, 2012 was a special day in the Saanich School District as we hosted the opening ceremony for the new replacement North Saanich Middle School. This $23 million facility is built for 21st century learning and has been custom-built as a developmentally appropriate school for 11-14 year old middle level learners.
The challenge districts are now facing is how to provide cost-effective, relevant, current, sustainable, environmentally conscious and ubiquitous access to resources that work for today's educational outcomes and simultaneously anticipate the future. School district technology plans are usually developed around a three to five year cycle to anticipate funding, resourcing, planning, implementation and professional development opportunities.
We are very proud to announce that the Saanich School District was a finalist in Canada's Greenest IT. We have shown that you don't have to compromise functionality while reducing energy, green house gases (GHG) and our carbon footprint. Saanich is utilizing an open source solution which uses a Linux server at each school and very energy efficient diskless clients for our desktops.
