Student Townhall Meetings with MP Elizabeth May

Elizabeth May recently came to Claremont Secondary and Stelly's Secondary to have a student townhall meeting to talk about Canadian government and politics. Thank you Ms. May for coming, sharing and engaging with our students. Check out the article written by Stelly's Secondary student, Helen Gemmrich, about the event.

Cordova Bay Elementary School and Parkland Secondary School Seismic Project Agreements

The Board is pleased to announce that the district has entered into a project agreement to commence a seismic upgrade on Cordova Bay Elementary School. Additionally, the Board is also pleased report that the seismic work at Parkland Secondary School that was approved in January 2015 is well underway.

We are excited to be moving forward with these projects. These upgrades are a key part to ensuring the safety and security of our children, employees, and assets through increased resistance to seismic activity.

Your Voice Matters – Still Time to Participate in Thoughtexchange

Before spring break, all School District 63 staff, parents and community partners were invited to answer some questions about our schools, our school district and public education. A few hundred respondents provided some very helpful input through this first "Share" phase of a three step online process using ThoughtExchange.

Flipped Learning in SD63

Melanie Paas and Michelle Shuck, two biology teachers at Claremont Secondary, have embraced using flipped classroom methods to support teaching and learning in their classrooms. Flipped Learning, which has also been called inverted learning and reverse instruction, is a means for them to shift from a traditional lecture-based, teacher-centered course to an interactive, discussion-based course where the teacher is a guide on the side.

West Coast Trail and the Nitinat Triangle - Outdoor place based education at Stelly's Secondary

Outdoor place based education is part of the culture at Stelly's Secondary. The Outdoor Pursuits classes from Stelly's have taken many trips in its 35 year history. Destinations on Vancouver Island have included the Juan de Fuca Trail and Cape Scott, but the main two that Stelly's chooses to focus on are the Sayward Lakes and the West Coast Trail/Nitinat Triangle. Both trips involve hiking and canoeing in the beautiful, rugged and, in some cases, very isolated outdoors.
