Flag Half-Masting - In Recognition of the Kamloops Tragedy

In recognition of the discovery of at least 215 Indigenous children buried at a former residential school near Kamloops, all Canada and BC flags will be lowered to half-mast until Mon July 12, 2021.

Message from Board Chair, Tim Dunford

To all our staff, parents and community,

As 2020 draws to a close, schools in Saanich are about to embark on the winter break and it gives me, on behalf of your Board of Education, the opportunity to express, with humility and respect, our gratitude for and confidence in all your efforts, and to offer best wishes for a relaxing and restorative holiday.

While COVID-19 has challenged our world, our communities, and our school district, as well as the work of Trustees, we have been fully briefed on the extensive daily operational work, in all quarters, that has been required to adapt our schools during 2020 for the education of our students. We offer a sincere thank you to all District staff: teachers, bus drivers, clerical and support staff, maintenance, groundskeepers, custodians and cleaners, administrators and Board Office personnel who have responded so diligently, reassuring us that they've "got this", every day.

Sincere appreciation, also, to the Saanich Teachers’ Association, CUPE Local 441, the Saanich Administrators’ Association, and the Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils’ of Saanich.  Each organization has represented the interests of its members so well and, by extension, the students, families and our community throughout these difficult times. Our district and our Board benefit immensely from your perspectives and advice.

The senior administrative team at the Board Office must also be commended for their dedication to keeping the good ship Saanich watertight, on an even keel and weathering the pandemic storms. As Chair, I know that I can say how much the Board values your commitment, expertise and advice.

The W'SANEC peoples and Indigenous communities and staff have worked with us throughout this troubled year to meet the educational challenges of the pandemic, and for that, too, we are deeply grateful.

Because of these constant efforts by all our District staff, partners and community the Board maintains confidence in the standards of public education in Saanich in 2020, throughout and despite the pandemic.

It's in this context, then, that on behalf of the Trustees I wish you all a healthy and restful break, time for relaxation and rejuvenation, and an opportunity to re-connect with family and friends, even if only virtually.

We look forward to 2021 with gratitude and confidence.

Merci    HÍSW̱KE  Thank you,

Tim Dunford
