08 December 2009
Printer-friendly version

Kindergarten to Grade 8: Registration takes place at the School Board Office, 2125 Keating Cross Road.
Grades 9 to 12: Registration takes place at secondary schools.

The Registration Process
Parents of elementary and middle school aged students seeking placement at their (catchment) school will be required to complete a standard registration form for each child. This form is available at the Board Office, or you can download a copy from the link at the bottom of this page.

In addition to completing this form, you are asked to provide the following:

  • Proof of child's age (birth certificate or passport)
  • medical care card (to confirm number)
  • proof of residence

Once complete information has been provided, the District Placement Office will perform an assessment of available space, and families will be notified as soon as placement is confirmed.

Residence Outside a School's Catchment Area
If you are seeking a placement for your child at a location other than your catchment school, you are required to follow the process outlined above and additionally, you are asked to complete an Application for Attendance out of area form.

When all necessary information has been provided, your child's name will be added to the waitlist for the appropriate grade level at the school of your choosing. This process takes somewhat longer as the school will not confirm placement of "out of area" students until they are certain that the needs of those residing in catchment have been met.

Placement is offered on a first come, first serve basis. Parents with siblings currently attending the school will be given first priority. Once placement is confirmed, the student's placement will not be challenged for any reason. They will, from entry point onward be treated as if they were ‘in catchment'. This also applies to their movement to the next level of schooling.

What Happens If Space Is Not Available?
While every effort is made to place children who wish to attend their neighborhood school at that school, occasionally it becomes necessary to explore alternate placement when class sizes reach their maximum. Please be assured that all other options are thoroughly explored before making such a decision. Should displacement occur, the child would be offered an alternate placement at the next closest location that has space. The child would then be placed on a waitlist and given the opportunity to return to the catchment school as soon as space becomes available. When space does becomes available, it would be the family's choice as to whether the child returns to their catchment school, or remains in the alternate placement for the duration of the year or longer.
