Welcome to 2012
Everyone in School District 63 welcomes 2012 with the optimism and enthusiasm that characterize our wonderful schools and the equally wonderful families and communities that they serve. Our new board is settled in and ready for its work, both formally through board committees and official meetings, and informally through trustee engagement with citizens and community partners.
Message to Parents re: 2012
As we move into 2012 we do so with "phase one" of the province-wide teacher strike still in place. If you want to know more about the history and status of provincial teacher bargaining between the BC Teachers' Federation (BCTF) and the BC Public School Employers' Association (BCPSEA) please check www.bcpsea.bc.ca. As parents you will have questions about a number of issues as we move forward within phase one, which is likely to carry on for some time. We will attempt to answer some of those questions here.

Consideration of Moving Recess Delayed
At its inaugural meeting of December 5, 2011 the Board of Education discussed a report from the superintendent that proposed a move of recess to the end of each day. This move would be to create efficiencies around supervision schedules of district management staff who are required to do supervision as a result of teachers being on strike. With a number of valid concerns being raised by parents it became evident that if this move is to occur it should only be after further deliberation by the board. As such the board passed a motion to deploy additional non-union staff to supervision duties (speech and language pathologists, psychologists and First Nations assistants) and review the supervision issue at the public board meeting of January 18, 2012.
